CGH Emergency Department RN’s Earn Certification

On March 7, 2011 the Emergency Department at Carteret General Hospital set the mark when eleven registered nurses completed the Certified Emergency Nurses exam. The CEN exam, administered through the Board Certification for Emergency Nurses (BCEN) is a nationally recognized specialty certification exam. The BCEN’s vision is to be a benchmark for accurate testing and assessment of knowledge and critical thinking skills for Emergency Nursing, associated specialties, and its subspecialties.

Of the approximately 95,000 Emergency Department Nurses in the United States, only 23,000 have been certified through the examination process. Certification helps patients and employers identify emergency healthcare nurses who have met certain nursing specialty standards and have learned a defined body of knowledge.

Terri DeWees, Emergency Services Director shared, “Our team set a goal to raise the bar in our Emergency Department. I am proud of our staff that went from 2 certified Emergency Nurses to 13. I’m proud to work with this committed and dedicated team here at Carteret General.”

Carteret General’s Emergency Department now boasts a total of 13 CENs and 1 Certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, bringing the total percentage of certified emergency nursing staff to 33%, an accomplishment to be celebrated. Carteret General’s commitment to providing safe, high quality emergency care can be further evidenced by this accomplishment.

The following staff earned their CEN on March 7th:
