Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
Purpose
A series of breathing test that show the physician the condition of your lungs.
Test
A Pulmonary Function Test is completed in the Cardiopulmonary Department. Before testing, you will be asked questions such as your height, weight, medications, cough, smoking and work history. You will be asked to sit in a special chair which faces a mouthpiece. You will breath in and out of this mouthpiece through the machine that will measure your breathing. Your doctor may order several different tests or breathing exercises, which may include a nebulizer threatment. All tests are completed with your sitting in the chair. You will be given full instructions before each test and coaching during the test. The tests take 1 to 2 hours. When testing is complete, the results will be interpreted and forwarded to your doctor.
