Lactose Tolerance Testing
Scheduling:
The physician's office will schedule your test for 0730 on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday morning. Go to the PATIENT REGISTRATION department first and then to the laboratory.
Preparation/Instructions:
Before Test
- You must NOT EAT OR DRINK anything (except small amounts of water) for at least 8 hours before your test.
- No alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours prior to testing.
- You should bring a book to read or other quiet activity as the test will last for about 2½ to 3 hours.
During Testing
- No smoking or gum chewing.
- You should drink 1-2 glasses of water during the test.
- As the lactose drink you will be given may cause some cramping and diarrhea, it is important to notify the lab staff of any symptoms so they may be documented on the report.
- You must remain at rest during the course of the test.
What Will Happen:
Soon after arrival at the lab, you will have a blood sample drawn for your baseline test. Once that sample is run and results obtained, you will be given a sweet drink (lactose solution). After the drink is finished your blood will be drawn at timed intervals to measure the effect of the lactose in the drink on your blood glucose level. The timed intervals are: 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1hour, 1.5 hours, and 2 hours after drink is finished.
