Semen Specimen Collection
In order for the test results to be valid, the proper collection procedure must be followed. Please read and follow the instructions indicated below.
Semen Analysis - Post Vasectomy Check
A Semen Analysis is generally recommended for six weeks after your vasectomy.
Patient Instructions:
Before the date of specimen testing, abstain from sexual activity for 3 days. The entire specimen is to be collected by masturbation into a sterile plastic or glass container. A container may be obtained from your physician's office or from the CGH laboratory. A clean plastic or glass container from home may also be used. A specimen in a condom is not acceptable.
Submit the specimen to the laboratory within 30 to 45 minutes of collection. If it is not possible to collect and to deliver the specimen within that time frame, the specimen may be collected on the hospital premises.
Semen Analysis—Fertility Screen
Patient Instructions:
Before the date of specimen testing, abstain from sexual activity for 3 days. The entire specimen is to be collected by masturbation into a sterile plastic or glass container. A container may be obtained from your physician's office or from the CGH laboratory. A clean p1astic or glass container from home may also be used. A specimen in a condom is not acceptable.
The specimen must be submitted to the laboratory within 15 to 20 minutes from the time of collection, being kept as close to body temperature as possible. If it is not possible to collect and deliver the specimen within that time frame, the specimen must be collected on the hospital premises.
Specimen Delivery
Semen specimens must be submitted directly to the laboratory. Then the patient will need to register in the Outpatient Registration Department.
The laboratory accepts semen specimens Monday thru Friday between the hours of 7:30AM and 3PM. The report will be available from your physician' s office the following weekday.
